Costa Rica Family Holiday - 14 Nights

This holiday starts in the steamy, humid jungle canals of Tortuguero where you will see the diversity of wildlife and birds that frequent this unique and interesting habitat. Sightings may include caimans, howler monkeys and spider monkeys. If you travel between the months of April and October you can take a guided night walk on the Caribbean beach and may see nesting Atlantic Green Turtles.

Then travel on to the Sarapiqui region, where you will take guided day and night walks within a primary rainforest reserve and may have the chance to see red eyed tree frogs, bats, snakes, spiders and the eye-catching 'Blue Jeans' frog and other poison dart frogs.

Continuing on to the Arenal region you will see a different landscape that includes the majestic and dominant Arenal Volcano. Here you can explore the rainforest in a variety of active ways that could include hiking, ziplining, mountain biking and horse riding.

Finish the holiday at the family friendly Parador Hotel where you can relax in the pool or on the beach and enjoy the stunning views across the Pacific Ocean. A guided walk through the nearby Manuel Antonio Park to spot sloths, Capuchin and Squirrel monkeys and an array of other wildlife is included in your stay.

Day to Day

Below is an example day to day itinerary.

Day 1

Fly from UK to San Jose, Costa Rica. Overnight in hotel in San Jose.

Day 2

Vehicle and boat transfer to Tortuguero (approx. 4 hours). Overnight in the simple but comfortable Pachira hotel and relax to the sounds of the forest (BLD)

Day 3

Enjoy a guided boat tour on the Tortuguero canals, your guide will point out resident birdlife and you may spot caimans, iguanas and howler monkeys. In the afternoon you will take a trip to the village of Tortuguero (BLD).

Day 4

Transfer to the Sarapiqui region to stay at the Tirimbina Rainforest Reserve which is an education and research centre. At the back of the accommodation is a private reserve reached by a long hanging bridge of the Sarapiqui River and this can be explored independently or with a guide. an original eco-lodge that protects nearly 500 acres of primary rainforest in a reserve situated to the back of the lodge that is reached by a hanging bridge across the Sarapiqui river. Included in your stay is a guided night walk into the reserve to get close up with the insects, amphibians, reptiles and possibly mammals that come out at night (BLD).

Day 5

Enjoy a morning chocolate tour that takes place in the Tirimbina Rainforest Reserve which is reached by the long hanging bridge across the Sarapiqui River. A fun, interactive tour to learn how to make chocolate from bean to bar (BD).

Day 6

Private air-conditioned vehicle transfer to Arenal Region to Lost Iguana Resort (approx. 1.5 hrs). Lost Iguana Resort is nestled in tropical foliage with a variety of wildlife and birdlife in the grounds and trails that can be explored (B).

Day 7

A guide will accompany you on a Hanging Bridges walk through the forest and point out flora and fauna, you may see monkeys, agoutis and a variety of tropical birdlife. Overnight at Lost Iguana (B).

Day 8

Today you will take the Eco-Glide tour which is a series of ziplines through the rainforest canopy. Overnight at Lost Iguana (B).

Day 9

Today you will have a leisurely safari float on the Penas Blanco River (B).

Day 10

Transfer in a private air-conditioned vehicle to the Parador Hotel near Manel Antonio National Park (approx. 5 hrs) (B).

Day 11

Today you will take a guided tour of Manuel Antonio National Park, this park is one of the most popular National Parks in the country due to the beautiful beaches and wildlife spotting opportunities. The park is home to three monkey species, two and three toed sloths, coatis, racoons, boa constrictor snakes, iguana and numerous birds, butterflies and insects. The trails is approx. 2 miles long and is flat terrain. Half way through the walk a stop will be made at a stunning beach for a rest or a quick swim. The tour takes approx. 2 to 3 hours (B)

Day 12 to 14

Days at leisure to swim in the pools or relax on the beach. Kayaks and paddleboards are avaialable to hire on the beach (B).

Day 15

Transfer by private air-conditioned vehicle to San Jose International Airport (approx. 3 hours). Depart San Jose on international flight to UK.

Day 16

Arrive in UK
